I sense an underutilized space with decent bones is not reaching its potential.

Many people are missing an opportunity. Not just to be outdoors--but to clink a glass with friends, share a meal with family, or maybe even frame a memory.

They're mostly devoid of plant life.

What's more-- the owner of each patio has likely inquired to replace each patio. I have seen this across 2 decades designing gardens. Whether old or new, patios and outdoor living spaces are all too often designed without life, and life does not come to them.

Everyone has pain points when it comes to achieving an inviting space. Let's start with what you have, and if it comes to a full scale plan, fine. But I'm betting you already have a space that can be flexed simply and elegantly with planters or other fixtures until then.

Don't let trends in deserted island hardscapes dictate your happiness.

There should be enough life surrounding your space that your neighbor wouldn't know if you were enjoying it naked. Not just tired evergreen walls, but with the careful overlap of living and architectural elements that create depth and interest like all the garden books you've earmarked.
